Diverting Nearly 100 Tons from Silicon Valley Business
  • Case Study

Over 127 tons of material were removed and of that, 76% was diverted from landfill.

Objective

In December of 2020, Greener Source began the removal of furniture from a Silicon Valley area Fortune 500 Tech company. This 5-story campus building required over 127 tons of furniture to be removed.

Challenge(s) & Solution

With five weeks to complete the project, strict covid-19 safety protocols were held in place to ensure the safety of our team and those of the client. We successfully maintained the projected timeline and as a result, were able to donate 2.2 tons of furniture to nonprofits, the greatest possible for this project size, and recycle 15.5 tons of furniture by breaking down items by material, like metal, plastic and glass. Coincidentally, 79.2 tons of furniture, or 62% of the entire decommission was resold, allowing the client to collect total resale value for these items.

It makes me happy to see the full life cycle of the product I helped put back out there. Knowing it ends up in a responsible place, facilitated by this great team, makes me feel like I am contributing something good to the world.

Victoria Manibog, Senior Project Manager, Greener Source

From the project’s initial consultation to completion, Greener Source decommissioned this space in a shorter timeframe than usual due to client requirements, handling all aspects of the process entirely in-house. By quickly and thoroughly assessing all furniture to be removed, completing the entire liquidation process and finally, providing a detailed environmental impact report, the project wrapped up on-time and with over three quarters of affected materials diverted from waste.

Summary

Over 127 tons of material were removed, and of that total, 76% was diverted from landfill, allowing the client the opportunity to recover value through resale, support the community through nonprofit donations and increase waste diversion with over 15 tons of furniture recycled.
